"People are the most important raw material in the Nordic Region,? the report ?The Nordic Region as a Global Winner? concludes. If the Region?s relatively positive position is to be maintained, the best education system in the world will be needed. Nordic Masters in disciplines where the Nordic countries excel would be a step in the right direction.
A group set up to discuss the Nordic Masters concept has just met in Copenhagen. It heard input about the European Erasmus Mundus Masters Programme. Professor Guðmundur Hálfdanarson, who chairs the group, would like to see a Nordic pilot programme in place by autumn 2007.
"This autumn we will publish descriptions of 2-3 Nordic Masters programmes. We hope the best universities in the Nordic Region will submit proposals, preferably in disciplines where the Nordic Region has already done well in international competition, e.g. welfare or the environment," Hálfdanarson said.
